Excursions
There are many wonderful places to visit in the
Faroe Islands. We have chosen two of them - Tórshavn and Kirkjubø. These Excursions are included the Basic Conference Package.
Tórshavn
Wednesday 9th
of June 2010, 17.00 -
18.30
One of the smallest capitals in the world The Norwegians Viking settlers came
to the Faroe Islands around year 850. In the year of 900 they
established their own parliament with local Things in different
parts of the Faroe Islands and the main Thing on Tinganes in
Tórshavn. Christianity was proclaimed here around year 1000 AD.
On this excursion we take a walk to Tinganes, also
known as Úti á Reyni. Here the government
is located. (If we are lucky, we will meet Løgman, who is the
prime minister of the Faroe Islands.) We will also visit Fort Skansin,
which was built in 1580 to
protect the city against attacks from pirates.
Kirkjubø
Thursday 10th of June 2010, 16.15 - 18.15
The most important
historical place in the Faroes
Kirkjubøur is the most important historical place in The Faroe
Islands. Faroe Islands diocese was founded
in 1111 under the Archbishop of Nidaros and Kirkjubøur as a
seat. Here Erlendur Bishop wrote in 1298 the Faroe oldest known
document: The Sheepletter about the country's agricultural
conditions.
Sverri, king of Norway 1184 – 1202, was fostered and educated as
a clergyman here in Kirkjubøur.
The farm house, formerly the
bishop’s residence is today the home of the Patursson family,
as it has been since 1550. The historic portion of the house,
including the Roykstova dating back to ca. 1100, is open to the
public May – September. Until
2005 was Kirkjubøur an independent municipality with
neighbouring
village Velbastaður but now they are a part of Tórshavnar Kommuna.
In Kirkjubøur live about 80 people.
On this excursion we will visit Kirkjubø which is located
in beautiful surroundings. We will hear the guide tell
us the interesting story about the historical place Kirkjubø
which story goes back to the year of 1111.
